About Jane

I have worked as a clinical psychologist in the following areas:

  • child and adolescent mental health
  • offender rehabilitation
  • child development
  • vocational assessment
  • couples counselling
  • individual psychotherapy
  • children in State care

I came to be a clinical psychologist through a somewhat meandering path. I initially trained as a nurse, but realised I was more interested in the psychological aspects of working with people.

After completing an Honours degree in Psychology at Victoria University, I was very drawn to working with children and so I completed the three-year Postgraduate Diploma in Child Psychotherapy at the University of Otago. This programme was psychodynamically based. In terms of developing psychotherapeutic and counselling skills, this gave me an excellent foundation for working with children and families.

The call of clinical psychology was still strong, however, and after a few years I resumed studying again, achieving the Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Psychology and a Master of Philosophy in Psychology at Massey University in 1997.

I am comfortable practising clinical psychology because it has a strong evidence base and I find I am able to use the skills and insights from my psychotherapy background to enrich the work I do with clients.

Please feel free to contact me to discuss my career path in more detail.
